The Haldeman

thehalderman.jpg

The long awaited unveiling of "The Halderman", painted in Rochester, Michigan in the fall of 1973, intended to be part of a series. I spent Watergate summer watching the hearings and sketching the witnesses. I only did the one painting of H. R. Haldeman, as soon I was sans studio.

The painting measures four by eight feet, latex paint on K-mart wood paneling. It is displayed here at the Chicken Shit Gallery in Algonac, Michigan. It is currently not on display in my hallway in Los Angeles.

Here's the same image converted to grayscale.

Not much difference, is there? Here are the two color palettes. How'd they sneak that little bit of red and blue in?

Public Nudity in Paris? But of course!

louvrestatue.jpg
I walked over to the Louvre one day to see what the fuss was about and it was closed! Helluva deal! Outside, I found this garden with all these statues of naked French broads. Actually, I'm not sure they're French, for all I know, they're probably Greek goddesses since they are striking those goddess type poses. Here's one I like. I tried to look up this particular garden, but haven't turned up anything yet. I think it's called the King's Garden. Can't keep track of them all. Paris is lousy with statutes and gardens Ôø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡Ôø‡everytime you turn around, you run into one. Statues and pickpockets....

Pretty Boy Lived Here

513 Young Street.jpg

In January, 1932, Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd moved his wife and son into this frame bungalow on Young St. in Tulsa, a few miles north of downtown. A month later, the cops raided the house, but Floyd and his partner escaped. Read all about it in Pretty Boy by Michael Wallis. If you can't find it anywhere else, Steve's Sundries in Tulsa should have it, and other essential books about lawlessness and crime in Oklahoma. Support your independent bookstore!

Dirty Snow

dirtysnow.jpg
I know I'm not alone in waxing about dirty snow. Not yellow snow, (the poetic territory of the late, great, Frank Zappa) or mountain snow with natural dirt and mud, but city snow, for an instant, pure driven snow, hopeful, beautiful - then, for the rest of it's life cycle, driven on snow, shunned, neglected. There is no deeper portrait of dejection then that last little pile of dirty snow in the corner of a parking lot in Detroit Ôø‡Ôø‡·åØ·åØ·åØ·åØÔø‡once a majestic peak, a plowed up mountain Ôø‡Ôø‡·åØ·åØ·åØ·åØÔø‡now slowly fading away, like Macarthur. Chokes you up, doesn't it? I know I have a tear on my cheek... or is it a snowflake?

Read about the largest dirty snow pile in the country.

Find out how black soot on snow contributes to global warming.

I'm Ready for My Crane Shot

craneshot.jpg

What is more Hollywood then giving a Beanie Weenie a party? Why, it's the ubiquitous crane shot, and that's with a capital "U." Want to spice up your next home video? I recommend you rent or buy one. (A crane, not a Beanie Weenie.) Chapman is my favorite, although you might want to shop around for the one that fits your needs best. Then, slip a Hollywood cop a dozen Krispy Kremes, block off a street or two, and swing that boom, baby, thirty or forty feet in the air. It sure is fine.

PS, For an excellent Beanie Weenie recipe, Click Here. Low in carbs, too!

"Pretty Boy" Robs Hometown Bank

sallisawbank.jpg
This flower shop in Sallisaw, Oklahoma used to be a bank in Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd's hometown. (Actually, he lived in nearby Akins.) In 1932, the famous Oklahoma bank robber decided to come home and knock it over. He invited his relatives to come watch him rob it. Many of them gathered across the street, complete with picnic lunch. Read more about Charles Arthur Floyd, the Oklahoma Bandit King.

Now, I Wanna Be Your (Hot) Dog

lafayetteconeyisland.jpg
Pink's in Hollywood is a great place to get a hot dog, no doubt, especially if you like variety. But the classic barkers at Lafayette Coney Island ,in Detroit, are still the best. Loose beef in a hot-dog bun, smothered with cheese, onions, and chili served up by freshly arrived, undocumented aliens. Why mess with anything else?

Breakfast at the CafÔø‡Ôø‡ˆ©Ôø‡Ôø‡ de Flore

HamandEggsatFlore.jpgYou ever see eggs like that? Good eating at the CafÔø‡Ôø‡ˆ©Ôø‡ de Flore in Paris...France that is. Although you can get good eggs in Paris, Texas, too. The eggs they use come from chickens who listen to French audiobooks on their iPig (a special iPod for pigs,) and fusion jazz from the Provinces while they lay. The pigs get to go to anti-Bush rallies and watch Green Acres reruns.

Arnold Ziffel is a national hero in France, much like Jerry Lewis and Krzysztof Penderecki.

Elmore was a Category on Jeopardy about four years and a question on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? around the same time. French Chow in St. Clair Shores?

chezrobert.jpg

Here's Rose Sutter, the tough East Side restaurant reviewer, arriving at Chez Robert's restaurant in St. Clair Shores. French eating on the East Side? She was skeptical.

Read Molly Abraham's review of Chez Robert's for the whole scoop.

I had some kinda beef dish with oven fried potatoes. Sorry, my French isn't so good, but my fourchette worked just fine. The meal was good, but the vegetable was corn and Amy says the French feed corn to the pigs.... Helluva deal.
Rose had the Harper Avenue Whitefish, which she liked, and, of course, the decaf, which was fortunately fresh, so she'll be back. Especially since they have a good breakfast menu. She's not sold on crepes but needs a new breakfast spot in St. Clair Shores since Monty's closed.

Bill McGraw Finally Gets His Party

billgrad.jpg
Brother Tom McGraw threw our friend Bill a fabulous graduation bash, on August 7, in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. It was dubbed: "College - the best 35 years of my life." Bill got a cap and gown from former state senator, John Kelly, and was greeted by his many friends from the Free Press, and a few Bishop Gallagher and Wayne State buddies. Great time, great to see some of the old gang.
