They Did Wheelstands Then

Courtesy of Lawrence Monkhouse, the icon of my youth, The Little Red Wagon. Mopars forever!
Lawrence wrote:
"The attached photo was taken at the Grand Bend Dragstrip in the early sixties. As Bill blasted off the line, the Hemi faltered. The front end bounced off the pavement, and since Bill still had his foot in it, the front end came up big time banging the tailgate on the ground. This caused the Little Red Wagon to become airborne." Need more?

Secret Girl Gizmo

I was walking down Melrose Ave. yesterday shopping for a $1500 lamp when I spotted this recruiting poster or ad in a window. As best as I can figure, it's a "Third Eye Reader" or possibly some kind of shopping aid. I'll be consulting with a girl gizmo expert and let you know.

No Nuts Today

A Detroit black squirrel zips up a mature oak on the East Side of Detroit. The black coat is a color phase that a gray squirrel goes through. There are also red and sometimes albino ones. You don't find these guys just anywhere, mostly in northern cities. In the country, the black coat is an invitation to predators so this is an urban evolution maybe. This particular oak is not bearing this year so this fellow will have to go down the block for his nuts.

Whither Thither I Got My Zither

The Zither Three here at the Palm Beach County Fair. They didn't know "Stairway to Heaven" but it would've sounded great on three zithers. Like a guitar, a zither is played by plucking its strings with the fingers or a pick. Today, there is controversy about whether a zither is an autoharp (the more common term for this instrument,) or whether an autoharp is a zither. Here is what is sounds like. These three appear to be playing 21 Chord models like this one. Zither Hither, Ladies!

The Lonely Seagull

A lonely New Orleans seagull solemnly bows his head in memory of the senseless slaughter of American soldiers in Iraq.
Maybe not, but, yo, he is bowing his head. It's a hardscrabble life being a gull and you don't get a lot of compassion, especially from seaman. One exception comes from The Pakistan Daily News, a story about a seagull "found by a yacht crew in the city of Antalya, Turkey, with a leg that was on the verge of gangrene....The crew, apparently inspired by peg-leg pirates, amputated the leg and created a new one with the leg of a Barbie doll and a big Barbie doll hand as a foot." They named her Martha.
